Firefighters have issued a warning about overloading electrical sockets after they spent nearly five hours at a blaze in Sandbach at the weekend.

Fire engines from Alsager, Crewe and Holmes Chapel rushed to a house in Elton Road, Ettiley Heath.

The fire is believed to have started due to overloaded sockets and Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service and they are urging people to follow advice.

A Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "A fire was reported in the first-floor bedroom of a property on Elton Road.

"Firefighters in breathing apparatus isolated gas and electricity and made a vent in the bedroom window before using a high-pressure fan to clear smoke.

"The fire was extinguished using hose reel jets and the bedroom and loft space were checked for fire spread.

"The neighbouring loft space was also checked for fire spread. The area was dampened down and both properties cleared of smoke using a high-pressure fan."

The spokesperson added: "A fire investigation took place as crews cleared away debris and cut all floorboards back to clean wood.

"The investigation concluded that the cause was believed to be overloaded sockets. There was no one in the property at the time of the fire."
