An Alsager curry house is in the running to be named UK's best restaurant.

Latif's, on Crewe Road, Alsager, has been recognised as the best Asian restaurant in Cheshire East according to the Asian Restaurant Awards.

The awards cover the complete range of Asian and Oriental cuisines: Bangladeshi, Burmese, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Middle Eastern, Pakistani, Singaporean, Sri Lankan, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Latif's - which serves Indian and Pakistani dishes - has been shortlisted in the Midlands category after 100,000 online votes were cast by foodies. They will be competing with 14 other restaurants in the Midlands category.

A spokesman said: " Over 100,000 online votes from members of the spice-loving community determined the finalists.

"Judges from the Asian Catering Federation (ACF), which hosts the event, are now visiting the candidates to determine the overall category winners."

The winners of each category and overall Best UK Asian Restaurant award will be announced on Tuesday, August 31, at a ceremony held at the Mercure Piccadilly in Manchester.

Commenting on this year's awards, ACF chairman Yawar Khan said: "The pandemic has been devastating for many hospitality businesses and its workers.

"These awards will acknowledge the sector's resilience, innovation and generosity in the face of such adversity."

There are 10 regional categories, as well as Asian Chef of the Year, Best Takeaway, Best Group Restaurant of the Year, Best Fusion Restaurant, Vegan Restaurant of the Year, Street Food of the Year, Best Casual Dining and Innovative Restaurant of the Year.
