Stock from Alsager Civic's bar which is due to go out of date in the New Year, could be awarded to members of the community in a project which raised money for local causes during the summer.

Nicola Clarke, town clerk of Alsager Town Council, announced at a meeting last month that more stock at the Alsager Civic was "unfortunately" coming to the end of its sell-by date, which could not be returned.

Some of the stock has already been donated to Alsager Foodbank, but the alcohol has had to be "written off".

Tom Wolstencroft, Alsager Civic and Institute Manager, is exploring the possibility of doing a similar project to the summer, which saw alcoholic and non-alcoholic bundles awarded to local residents who were nominated for their hard work in the community in return for a £10 donation to local causes.

As a result of this, in September, Cllr Rod Fletcher, chair of Alsager Town Council, handed over cheques worth over £100 to Animals In Need, Alsager Friends of the Christie and the Alsager Branch of The Royal British Legion.

Cllr June Buckley had recently spoken to her friend who owns a pub and she was informed that several insurance companies are being taken to a class action regarding the interruption of trade on hospitality businesses due to Covid-19.

Cllr Buckley queried whether that was an avenue that the Alsager Civic could explore.

Mrs Clarke stated that the town council has been receiving frequent correspondence from Zurich regarding the matter.

Cllr Fletcher said: "Basically, do we pour this beer down the drain or do we try and give it to a good cause."

Mrs Clarke told the meeting that if the products were out of date the town council could not give it to residents, but they were looking at the stock which was due to go out of date in January.

Mrs Clarke added: "If anybody has got any bright ideas then contact Tom because he is looking at something like group awards or give them to communities to raffle off for good causes."

Councillors noted the write-off out of date stock from Alsager Civic bar stock to the value £168.56 and the potential for further stock write-off in January should Alsager Civic remain closed and bar stock is not able to be returned.
