Time is running out to apply for free voter photo ID ahead of the May 2nd elections.

Anyone who does not already have an acceptable form of voter photo ID will need to apply before the deadline at 5pm on 24 April.

Under new Government legislation, voters will need to show photo ID to vote in person at polling stations at the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner elections on 2 May.

Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK or EEA driving licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person's bus pass. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Those without an acceptable type of ID can apply online for a Voter Authority Certificate, at gov.uk or by applying for and submitting a paper form to Cheshire East Council. Applicants must be registered to vote and will need to provide their date of birth, National Insurance number and a photograph.

Jackie Killeen, director of electoral administration and guidance at the Electoral Commission, said: "Voters will be required to show photo ID at polling stations at the May elections. The availability of free ID helps ensure elections remain accessible to all eligible voters.

"For those who don't currently have the ID they need, it's crucial they apply before the deadline so that they can cast their vote at the polling station. That date is fast approaching so don't delay."

Rob Polkinghorne, Electoral Registration Officer for Cheshire East Council, said: "With the deadline to apply for free photo ID only a few days away, it is important that the voters of Cheshire East make sure they're election ready.

"If you need any help applying for free ID or want to request an application form, you can contact our electoral services team on 0300 123 5016 or visit the Electoral Commission website at: electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections."

People are being reminded they have a range of voting options – they can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 17 April. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on 24 April.

Information about the requirements and all your voting options can be found on the Electoral Commission's website
