An Alsager blacksmith has helped a group of railway enthusiasts restore a 1950s rail sign and get it back on track at its original station.

Andrea Hughes who runs Andrea' Anvil at Hall Farm in Alsager worked her miracles on the corroded 10ft by two ft Sandbach station platform sign.

Now the sign is set to be installed at the town's station near to its original location - thanks to the hardwork of the Friends of Sandbach Station and local organisations.

And the Friends of Sandbach Station couldn't be happier as next week they will see the 70 year old sign back at the station.

John Scarrott, chair of Friends of Sandbach Station said: "We're delighted that it's finally going to make it on to the platform and be displayed.

"We're so grateful for all those who have helped or donated towards the project. The sign will be installed on Platform 2 close to where it originally stood.

"This has all been made possible thanks to help and contributions from the local communities around Sandbach and Alsager."

Sandbach Town Council donated a grant for the project and sign is being installed by Sandbach company DSL.

"We are very grateful to Sandbach Town Council without which the installation would not be possible," said Mr Scarrott.

"A small contribution to the works has been made by FOSS. We would also wish to thank Network Rail and Northern ."

The sign frame and design was skilfully constructed by Alsager blacksmith, Andrea Hughes.

"The outside was quite corroded so had to be sandwiched between two metal frames," she said.

Andrea, whose blacksmith business is based at Hall Farm in Alsager, made a frame for the posts and weatherproofed it so it will last for future generations to see.

She added: "It's such a lovely sign and I am really pleased with how it has turned out."
