Fans at Alsager Town Football Club are waiting to hear who their new first team manager is after the club was plunged into chaos at the Cheshire Senior Cup tie.

Noel Dempsey, who had been in place as first team manager at the club for the last four months, turned up at the Mornflake stadium to be told by his chairman it was his "last" match.

Noel told Alsager Nub News: "I was looking forward to the match and watching the lads but when I confronted the chairman and asked whether what I had heard was true I put my coat on and left."

Alsager Town chairman, Terry Greer, confirmed to Alsager Nub News that he had decided to change the manager but had originally wanted Noel to manage the game against Crewe Alex.

"We're in the relegation zone and we have lost to two teams below us. We can't afford to lose any more games.

"It's vitally important that we stay up. I just couldn't afford to take the gamble.

"You live and die by results and we just weren't getting them with Noel. It's always a difficult thing to do.

"I wanted to speak to Noel face-to-face but someone else had rung him."

Instead Aaron Kenyon, Alsager's assistant manager, took charge of the game on Tuesday night which Alsager Town lost 4-0 to Crewe.

Noel Dempsey watched the cup tie game from home tweeting: "My time as Alsager Town FC manager has come to an end.

"I had found out I was being replaced before the game and decided I'd swap side line view for sofa view.

"There's a way of going about things in football and what's happened isn't the way. Live and learn."

Chairman Terry Greer told Alsager Nub News that he was appointing former Sandbach United's former first team manager, Andy Hockenhull, as Director of Football and Don Brown also from Sandbach United as first team manager.

But when Alsager Nub News approached Andy Hockenhull he said he had only agreed to "help out" and was hoping to persuade Noel Dempsey to come back to Alsager.

Both Andy and Don were due to be meeting players at Alsager Town Football Club tonight (Thursday).

When Alsager Nub News asked Noel if he would return to the club he said: "It was a bit of a shock but I'm not going back.

"I've been offered a number of new roles and I wish Alsager all the best."

Sandbach United is currently looking for a new first team manager after Andy Hockenhull stepped down after nine years at the helm for family commitments.

Andy took over in 2012, guiding the Hind Heath Club into the NorthWest Counties League finishing in the top five in the first two seasons.

He also won the Crewe and District Cup in 2016 and back-to-back NWCFL Division 1 cups in 2019 and 2020, becoming only the second team in the competitions history to do so.

This season he also guided the team to the Third round of the FA Vase for the first time in the club's history.
