The much-anticipated installation of a zebra crossing on a busy Alsager road is finally due to be carried out just in time for the new school year in September.
Cheshire East Council will install a zebra crossing on Crewe Road, near the junction with Cranberry Lane, using both section 106 money from the housing developments at Goss Place and from the Sustainable Modes of Transport to School fund.
The works will also include the relocation of the existing bus stop.
The installation means that Crewe Road, from the junction with Arrowsmith Drive to the junction with Close Lane will be temporarily closed on Monday, 23rd August, Saturday, 4th September and Sunday, 5th September.
The alternative route will be via the following streets: - Crewe Road, Butterton Lane, Barthomley Road, Slaughter Hill, Narrow Lane, Crewe Road Roundabout, Hungerford Road, Haslington Bypass, Haslington Roundabout, Wheelock By Pass, Houndings Lane, Inner Relief Road Roundabout, Old Mill Road, The Hill, Newcastle Road, Cappers Lane, Sandbach Road, Knutsford Road, Linley Lane and Lawton Road.
Pedestrian access to any premises situated within the temporary closure will be maintained at all times.
Cyclists will be required to dismount in order for access to maintained. Vehicular access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and residents where possible.
Speaking at a previous meeting of Alsager Town Council's Planning, Environment and Community Committee, Cllr Rod Fletcher said: "As everyone knows a lot of young mums that try to get to Cranberry Academy off Goss Place and Burgess Grove have not been able to get across Crewe Road safely with young children in pushchairs."
However, the crossing will not be in the location town councillors originally preferred because the "optimum" place failed a safety audit.
Instead, the crossing is going to be located west of Cranberry Lane because it "would not have been safe where most people would have wanted it".
When Miller Homes' planning application for what is now the Goss Place estate was approved, a safe crossing was requested on Crewe Road.
Under a section 106 agreement Miller Homes was bound to give Cheshire East £50,000 for road improvements along Crewe Road, close to its housing development.
However, Cheshire East did not consider installing the crossing until construction had finished.
When the estate was complete, Miller Homes handed over the £50,000.
However, Cheshire East stated that an extra £30,000 was required in the contributions for the crossing to be installed.
That shortfall has now been filled with the remaining money coming out of Cheshire East's Sustainable Modes of Transport to Schools fund.
