UP CLOSE: Meet the Alsager businesswoman who wants to change how we shop and reduce single use plastics
An Alsager mum has launched an environmentally friendly business in a bid to save the planet for future generations.
So unhappy was Julie Williams with the use of plastics and the amount of waste packaging products produce that she launched her own enterprise.
Now the former project manager is encouraging others to follow in her footsteps and cut down on the amount of single plastic use.
Julie, from Duncan Close, Alsager, restricts her own use of plastics to the bare minimum and avoids supermarket shopping whenever she can.
"I shop at farm shops and try not to shop in supermarkets which helps prevent single use plastics.
"I also try to buy second hand things whenever I can. We've lost of ability to repair these days and instead just replace things," says Julie.
"I'm doing this for my six-year-old son and for future generations to come. They've even found plastic in the Polar ice caps which isn't good."
Julie launched her mobile business, 'The Fill Up Shop', in July and spends the week touring local markets, including Sandbach and Alsager.
She promises a 'plastic free shopping experience, saving the planet with every shop' and encourages shoppers to take empty containers to fill up.
"Plastic has its place up to a point but sparingly and in the right manner," says Julie. "I don't think you could walk into anyone's house and not see plastic.
Julie got the idea to launch her business after visiting a similar operation in Whitchurch, Shropshire.
"I used to travel there to get my products and realised there was a gap in the market. I am just staying local at the moment."
Julie is in the process of formalising her website which will allow customers to order products on line.
"We'll then be able to offer a subscription service and get products delivered by Royal Mail," she said.
Everything is weighted and Julie carefully sources her products to ensure they are ethical.
Her products, which range from herbs and spices to pasta, coffee beans, cleaning products and soaps and shampoo, have been well-received. .
"We live in a world of convenience. It's about changing the way we think and shop and making use more conscious of our choices."
