A trust set up to look after Alsager War Memorial has launched an appeal to raise funds to spruce it up ready for the 110th anniversary of the start of WW1.

The Alsager War Memorial Restoration Trust, formed in 2013 to look after and maintain the monument, wants to raise around £6,000.

Trust chairman, Tim Smith said: "In 2014 through the support of local organisation, the Council and individual donations sufficient funds were raised to repair the war memorial and provide for two subsequent cleans.

"Today, without any further cleaning or attention the memorial is looking, a bit "green" and the surrounding grass and gardens are looking tired and not the well-kept area that it should be.

"Hence the Trust is now looking to raise sufficient funds to carry out an immediate clean and spruce up the grass & garden area ahead of the 110th Anniversary of the start of World War One in August 2024."

After this, says Mr Smith, the Trust needs funds to perform regular tidying of the area and a professional clean every three to four years.

"Our aim is to raise at least £6,000 including £1,500 from the Town Council, £2,000 or so from local organisations, £1,000 or so from individual donations with the balance being made up of national grants and commercial donations," he said.

"While the main cleans must be done professionally we will seek help from local volunteers to improve the green areas.

"Hence, we are asking for donations from local community groups and individuals who would like to support us."
