Alsager looks set to get a new Starbucks drive-thru as part of the long-awaited Sainsbury's scheme which was approved earlier this year.

The original Sainsbury's application for a supermarket on the site of the former Twyford Bathrooms off Linley Lane, was given the thumbs-up a decade ago.

That included an in-store coffee shop, but the development never went ahead.

In April of this year, Cheshire East's strategic planning board approved a new application from the supermarket giant which had reduced the size of the car park, altered the petrol station and removed the in-store coffee shop.

It did however include a plot on the site for a standalone coffee shop operator to develop.

Now an application has been submitted to build a Starbucks on that part of the site.

A transport statement, submitted by WSP on behalf of Thistlewood Properties, states: "To complement the Sainsbury's site a Starbucks coffee shop has been proposed, with 19 associated customer car parking spaces and a drive-thru lane."

Vehicular access to the Starbucks would be taken from the Sainsbury's car park access road.

Pedestrian access to the site will be available from the dedicated pedestrian route through the Sainsbury's site, which links directly from the A5011 to the east.

A planning statement from Edgeplan and submitted with the application, states: "Due to the siting of the proposed drive-thru within an existing retail site and with sufficient distance from residential properties maintained, the proposal would not result in adverse harm upon amenity.

"The opening times will be from 6am-11pm. This is consistent with the opening times of the Sainsbury's store."

It adds: "The neighbouring uses to the application site are a large retail store and petrol filling station.

"A complementary restaurant use in this location is asserted to be wholly appropriate.

"It is expected that the vast majority of vehicular trips to the coffee shop would consist of supermarket customers that call in as part of a shopping trip, or vehicles passing the site on Linley Lane calling in as part of a wider journey."

The application, number 24/2767C, can be viewed on the planning portal on Cheshire East Council's website.

The last date for submitting comments is August 28 and the application is due to be determined by planning officers under delegated authority.
