Alsager parents, Dave and Sue Parkinson have every reason to be beaming with joy!

Their 38-year-old daughter is a major in the army and has been tasked with a high-profile job - commanding the troops guarding the King and the Royal Palaces.

Major Rebecca Parkinson is the first female British officer to hold the role of Captain of the Kings Guard which means she's responsible for the security at The Tower of London, St Jame's Palace and Windsor Castle.

Major Parkinson of 22nd Signal Regiment began her duties today (Monday) but has been training with her troops for several weeks at Beacon Barracks in Stafford where they are based.

Her father, Dave, 71, a retired lecturer and former chair of Alsager Tennis Club, said: "We're incredibly proud of her achievements.

"They trained for three months for this and we'll be going to see her towards the end. She's always worked incredibly hard and we're so proud of all she has achieved.

"When she was at university she decided she wanted to go into the army and went to Sandhurst. She loves her job and we couldn't be happier for her."

Major Parkinson, a mother-of-one, grew up in Alsager and is a former pupil of Cranberry Junior School and Alsager School.

Major Parkinson went to Sandhurst to do her officer training after studying mathematics at Sheffield University. She and her troops will be based in London until March 28th.
