Alsager person-centred counsellor, Hannah Bolton, explains how counselling can help so many people.

I've written a few articles now looking at specific things such as; anxiety, toxic relationships, emotional support for carers and the role of being a mum. I want to now look at what counselling is and how it can help you.

What is counselling?

Everyone has their own idea of what counselling is from what they have experienced, heard, or seen on programmes/films.

Whatever your perception of counselling is, I can tell you it is a safe space free from judgement to discuss your concerns. Counselling is client led and values your individual circumstances and experiences.

Whilst there are several types of counselling out there such as talking therapies, cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotherapy just to name a few the one thing they all have in common is catering for your needs.

Counselling is completed at your pace, giving you the time and space to help gain clarity on what may be overwhelming you.

How can counselling help me?

It can be daunting reaching out to ask for counselling, but by doing so you will find yourself on a journey to make positive steps to adapt and change to a new way of life.

This may be for example, to gain clarity on your current circumstances and help to put healthy boundaries in place. Counselling can help you see your thought process and behavioural patterns and discuss new ways of how to move forward.

By doing this, it will dramatically increase your self-worth and confidence. Counselling increases resilience and will also help you to see things from a new perspective.

How do I work as a counsellor?

I offer a free 20 minute consultation for you to get to know me and ask any questions you may have about counselling. If you decided to book a counselling session whether that's face to face, online or by phone I use the first session to get to know you.

I gather a picture of what's brought you to counselling and make a plan for how I can help you. I'm very much client-led and complete sessions at everyone's own pace.

I can adapt to your needs, for example I not only use a talking therapy but I have also used art, colouring, stress balls and fidget toys in my counselling sessions.

What do I provide counselling for?

Some of the things I provide counselling for are listed below:
