An Alsager Labour councillor has given his opinion on the new Prime Minister, saying the country deserves a fresh start and a Labour government.

Although he congratulated Liz Truss on her appointment and wished her well for her first few weeks in office, he raised concerns, saying we had 'the worst cost of living crisis in decades'.

Michael Unett, Labour councillor for East Ward, Alsager and chair of Cheshire East wide Labour party's Local Government Committee, said the country deserved more than just a change at the top.

Liz Truss beat Rishi Sunak by 20,027 votes to become the new Conservative leader and Prime Minister.

Cllr Unett said: "After 12 years of the Conservatives in government, we have public services on the verge of collapse and the worst cost of living crisis in decades – along with many numerous issues.

"These include integrity in public life, local towns left behind due to local government funding cuts and failure to meet the challenge of climate change and continuing to allow water companies to pump sewage into our rivers, streams and seas.

"A former Shell employee, I believe that unfortunately Liz Truss will be more focused on protecting the huge profits of her old bosses, than helping millions with their souring energy bills.

"In fact, Liz Truss has so far spent more time talking about cuts to corporation tax than about the cost of living.

"My hope will be that for the sake of millions who will struggle this winter, that she will listen to Labour and our plan for energy security,

"This is to freeze the energy price cap, upgrade 19 million homes to save households over £1,000 a year, cut national gas imports by up to 15 per cent, support 500,000 green jobs over the next five years, double Britain's onshore and offshore wind capacity, commit to new solar, tidal and hydrogen and end the delay on nuclear power.

"Labour would also provide help for small businesses with a £1bn contingency fund and by increasing small business rates relief."
