An Alsager air cadet who has been with her squadron since she was 13 has started a new chapter in her career – flying the flag for her county.

Eighteen-year-old Lucy Chadwick is HM Lord Lieutenant Cadet for Cheshire 2022 – 2023 and will be accompanying the Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, Lady Redmond MBE on visits.

The talented teenager who lives in Alsager started the role at the beginning of the month and will continue until the end of August next year.

And the former Alsager School and South Cheshire College student couldn't be happier for the Cadet Flight Sergeant who loves all-things RAF and has a passion for the role.

She said: "When I was told I had been appointed I was a bit shocked. I used to be quite shy but the Air Training Corps has given me so much confidence and taught me so much.

"The courses and opportunities open to cadets are amazing and the skills and friends you make are along the way help develop you as a person.

"Some of the courses I have done enhanced my social skills which enables me to speak to a variety of people from different backgrounds."

Lucy has risen through the ranks at 2493 (Alsager) Squadron Air Training Corps where she is based.

2493 (Alsager) Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Chris Hearnshaw and the rest of the squadron are proud of Lucy's latest achievement.

"It's a massive achievement and Lucy has worked very hard," said Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Hearnshaw.

"She is a role model for what young women can achieve today. This is a first for Alsager and we couldn't be happier.

"Lucy is an amazing individual – always cheerful and helpful and always going the extra mile. We've absolutely delighted for her."

The Cadet Flight Sergeant trains with the squadron based on Moorhouse Avenue, twice a week and it's something of a family affair.

For her father, Lee, is second in command at the squadron and her sister, Ellie, is an Adult Sergeant.

Lucy, who went through a rigorous selection process for her role as Lord Lieutenant Cadet for Cheshire, is looking forward to attending her first function.

"I would love to meet some members of the Royal family. I am so honoured to have been put forward for this prestigious role," said Lucy who has completed her 'A' Levels and has just her first job.

"I had an email last week from Lady Redmond welcoming me to the role and saying she was looking forward to the year ahead.

"I am a bit nervous but very excited. My role will be assisting Lady Redmond and helping her with anything she needs while she is at an event."

Lucy will not only be representing the Air Training Corps but also the other Armed Forces in her role.

And she is hoping that other youngsters follow in her footsteps and follow a similar path.

2493 (Alsager) Squadron Air Training Corps is having an open day in October when youngsters and their families can look around and see what is on offer in Alsager.
