Proud Kidsgrove residents are demanding the removal of bright yellow banners advertising a kebab shop – in a neighbouring town.

The banners – on two roads through Kidsgrove – had been celebrating the 850th anniversary of Newcastle borough.

But they have this week been removed and replaced by adverts for Papas Fast Food, on Crewe Road, in Alsager. Now Newcastle Borough Council has ordered a review to try to find out how the banners – on Liverpool Road and The Avenue – came to be erected in the first place.

Kidsgrove resident John Bowler said: "It is disgraceful. They are not even a Kidsgrove business. The banners are a complete eyesore and not in-keeping with the town. They should be removed."

Each banner is advertising a 10 per cent off promotional deal at Papas Fast Food.

Banners have been placed along Liverpool Road and The Avenue in Kidsgrove (Google).

Shopper Donna Evans, aged 52, added: "Looking at them you can't really miss them. It is certainly one way to get your attention. I live near Alsager and it is odd that they are advertising here but I guess it isn't too far away."

It is understood that Kidsgrove Town Council has received a 'flurry' of emails regarding the banners although Staffordshire County Council is responsible for streetlight advertising.

Shown a picture of the banners, county councillor David Williams, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "Fly-posting is illegal and we would always ask people not to put flyers and posters on lampposts unless they have received permission to do so. People can report fly-posting on the MyStaffs App."

The response comes as borough council leader Simon Tagg has raised the issue with the county council.

He said: "I have asked the county council to do a review on them because it is a private contractor that does that advertising for us. How can they get them removed or certainly at the end of the advertising time make sure they can't advertise again."

Papas Fast Food have been approached for a statement regarding the advertisement.
