Supermarket chain, Sainsbury's, has announced it is opening its new Alsager store in February.

And a jobs event was held today (Wednesday) at Alsager Civic to talk about the range of jobs available at the new Lawton Road store from food services assistants to trading assistants and services assistants.

The chain said around 100 jobs advertised on the company's website here would be created at the new store, on the site of the former Twyford Bathrooms site off Linley Lane.

Cheshire East Council gave the go-ahead for revised plans for a Sainsbury's store in Alsager in April.

The supermarket giant secured permission for the new store on the site of the former Twyford Bathrooms off Linley Lane in 2014 but it never materialised and the new store is based on the new plans approved this year.

Gary Morris, agent for Sainsbury's, told a meeting in April that a revised application had been submitted because the retail market had changed in the 10 years since the original permission had been granted.

"People shop in different ways now, " he said.

"A lot of people work at home which gives them more opportunities to shop during the week so we don't see the Friday and Saturday peaks that we used to, so that means we don't need as many car parking spaces because you've not as many people in the store at any one time.

"We've got online shopping now, which wasn't really a thing back in 2014."

The store includes a petrol station and four rapid EV charging points and a car park with 249 spaces. The site has also used renewable energy and solar panels on the roof.

The planning application also included a S106 agreement including:

  • a contribution of £100,000 towards a bus service;
  • £100,000 towards footway widening works along Linley Lane;
  • £200,000 towards junction improvement works at Linley Lane / B5077;
  • £100,000 towards highway improvement works in the local area.
