Furious Alsager councillors are set to launch a campaign to stop Alsager Waste Recycling Centre from being closed.

Cheshire East Council is currently consulting residents about the future of waste recycling centres in the borough.

And among the suggestions is a 'sub-option' to replace the current HWRC site in Alsager with a new HWRC in Congleton.

It states: "The council is also considering the viability of a sub-option which is to replace the current HWRC site at Alsager with a new HWRC site in Congleton."

Now councillors are looking at launching a petition and holding special sessions including at a local church to help residents take part in the survey here

The consultation survey says based on a high-level estimate, a new HWRC at Congleton could cost somewhere between £6-8million.

"This could place average annual capital borrowing repayments in the order of between £400k and £550k per annum, assuming a 25-year repayment period," says the document.

"Funding for this proposal is not included in the council's Medium Term Financial Strategy, and so if progressed as part of the final recommended option would need to be funded from making changes to services within the remit of the Environment and Communities Committee budget."

The matter was discussed by councillors at last night's annual meeting of Alsager Town Council.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Michael Unett, said he could not see how a new HWRC could be built in Congleton while Cheshire East Council was strruggling with finances.

Cllr Reg Kain said he had been to Alsager HWRC to talk to staff and find out more while fellow district councillor, Rod Fletcher said he was "appalled" at the idea.

"A similar plan was voiced in 2014 and it's back again. It's absolutely appalling and will only lead to more fly-tipping," he said.

The Cheshire East survey document states "there would be no significant traffic impact implications forecast for other HWRCs".

It also states that it is "highly unlikely the new site at Congleton would be operation in time for the start of the new contract".

Residents have until June 16th to take part in the consultation and can either complete the on-line survey, complete a paper version at local libraries or obtained by emailing the consultation team.

Residents can also call customer services on 0300 123 55 00 who will send in feedback on your behalf.

A Cheshire East spokesperson said: "This isn't the first time that this has been raised in public. It was one of the options presented to the council's environment and communities committee back in September 2023, subsequently approved as part of the report's recommendations CEC Report Template (cheshireeast.gov.uk) ."
