Famous Scholar Green-based silver band set to perform again at 'Last Night of Proms'event

A famous silver band based at Scholar Green near Alsager has been named as the band playing again at a 'Last Night of the Proms' event in South Cheshire.  

Rode Hall Silver Band was formed in 1837 as a fife and drum band, changing to its current brass band format in 1886 and now competes throughout the Northwest.  

Next month (September) the band, based at Scholar Green village hall, is playing at on Rotary-Congleton's Last Night at the Proms in Congleton. 

Rode Hall Silver Band plays at many events throughout South Cheshire and Staffordshire as well as entering contests that will "challenge the players" and "develop its sound". 

Rode Hall Silver Band, led by musical director Nigel Butler, will perform its regular programme of traditional proms music as well as some new numbers at the event on September 14th.

Accomplished mezzo-soprano, Sarah Maxwell will perform from her own repertoire and lead the audience in the spirited and well-known chorus of 'Rule Britannia'. This year she will be accompanied by an equally famous recording pianist, Christopher Cromar. 

Sarah who lives in Macclesfield, studied music at Chethams School in Manchester and at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. 

In 1992 Christopher Cromar won a scholarship to Chetham's School of Music, studying the organ. He was a finalist in the 1995 and 1997 National Young Organist Competitions at Plymouth. 

Christopher Cromar is the Musical Director of the Audley Male Voice Choir and until recently Director of Music at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in Aberdeen. 

The popular Last Night at the Proms takes place at the New Life Church in West Street, Congleton, starting at 7.30pm. 

Tickets cost £14 and can be bought from the Congleton Information Centre at the Town Hall or by cash only from any Rotarian.
