Cricket club to celebrate its 150th anniversary year in style - thanks to major outdoor project
A cricket club is starting its 150th year in style – after completing major work to the exterior of the club.
Alsager Cricket Club in Wilbrahams Way has had a new patio area laid and completed a major improvement project to the outside of the club building.
The patio area was created to further enhance the club's facilities and to attract more spectators to watch the senior and junior teams.
Alsager Cricket Club was promoted last year to Premier B in the North Staffs and Cheshire Cricket League.
Now the club, formed in 1874, is poised to start the new season which starts shortly with a sparkling new outside area.
Chairman Alan Stancliffe said: "We're really pleased with the end product as the contractors TTL fought against some terrible weather during the work.
"The site isn't flat so there were always going to be issues with the levels and the heights of the picket fence at the front of the structure.
"However, the end product has certainly been worth the wait. Committee member Martin Mellor and vice chairman Steve Armitage managed the project and always intended it to be ready for the start of the club's 150th year.
"We refurbished the interior of the club in 2022 and it has provided the community with a fantastic place to socialise, watch and play cricket and see all the annual sporting events on Sky and TNT. sports, in a safe and pleasant atmosphere.
"Some people still think we are a members only club, but this couldn't be further from the truth as we welcome guests throughout the year.
"We have fabulous links with Alsager AFC. Triton Hockey, Alsager Chess Club, Alsager Beer and Gin Festival, Alsager Pride, Alsager Lions, Alsager Scuba Diving Club and Alsager Gardeners' Association.
"It is also a fantastic addition as our club celebrates its 150th anniversary. The first team also got promoted last year to Premier B in the North Staffs and Cheshire Cricket League so the standard of cricket this year will also be higher.
"The club will be putting on numerous events in its 150th year which will be announced shortly and we hope that we can celebrate it with the fantastic Alsager community."
Alsager Nub News wishes the club every success with the new season and looks forward to tracing some of the history of the club from bygone days.
