An Alsager councillor is calling for clearer signage after several shoppers contacted him about receiving parking fines on the new Sainsbury's development after they had popped into Starbucks.

Councillor Rod Fletcher says some residents have used Starbucks which opened on the same site last month (September) as well as doing their shopping and were not aware the two hours parking related to their entire stay.

Now he is warning shoppers to be aware of the time limit and if shoppers call into the customer services desk at Sainsbury's following a fine it will be cancelled.

And he says if people call into Starbucks for a coffee before doing their shopping they can give their registration number to the customer services desk which will stop them getting a fine.

Cllr Fletcher said: "I just want as many people as possible to be aware that they do not have to pay the penalty notice."

He said he had been made aware that some people after having a coffee in the new Starbucks and then doing a shop in Sainsbury's store have been receiving a parking fine for staying more than two hours on Sainsbury's land.

"I have met with the store manager after local people have expressed concern to me that the maximum two hours stay does not make it clear the two hours also includes time in Starbucks.

"I asked if the signage could be made clearer. The manager pointed out that the cameras photo the cars on entering and leaving Sainsbury's land and the two hours apply to anyone filling up with petrol, having a coffee and shopping.

"What he did say was that if people on receiving a fine took it to the customer services desk in the store the fine would be cancelled. Some already have been.

"Also, if someone called in for a coffee before shopping, they could give their registration number to customer services who would ensure a fine was not issued if the overall time for having a coffee and shopping exceeded two hours."
