A project run by the voluntary group, Alsager Urban Wildlife Initiative, is appealing for handy volunteers.

The group runs a free hedgehog hole cutting service and is short of people to drill the holes into garden walls.

They say the work would ideally suit retired people interested in nature with an hour or two to spare.

A spokesperson said: "Full training is given and the group has the tools to use. The commitment is about an hour just a few times a year.

"Testimonials from residents show us that the tunnels bring about a huge increase of wildlife sightings."

The service is provided free of charge by Alsager Urban Wildlife Initiative  but people also like to give donations.
