Alsager motorists warned of delays as major Crewe roadworks, begin lasting until next year

By Deborah Bowyer 9th May 2022

Roadworks for the North West Crewe Package have commenced - lasting for 80 weeks in the Leighton area of town.

All main works will start on the North West Crewe Package (NWCP) scheme today (May 9) - lasting for approximately 80 weeks.

This includes the closure of the A530 Middlewich Road, between its junction with Pyms Lane and Smithy Lane.

Various closures will be in place along the A530 Middlewich Road from now until around March 2023.

The main NWCP works are being carried out by contractor Balfour Beatty on behalf of Cheshire East Council.

Balfour Beatty's base is located off the A530 Middlewich Road - in the area of the current road closure.

Access will be maintained for local residents.

Further information of the closure and the diversion route can be found here: North West Crewe Package (cheshireeast.gov.uk).

The overall NWCP scheme is expected to take around two years to complete.

80-week works will see a series of highways and junction improvements made around the Leighton area to ease congestion and improve access to Leighton Hospital.

It will also provide a link to new and existing housing developments. 1250 new homes will be arriving in the area within the coming years.

A section of Minshull New Road outside Leighton Academy will also be permanently closed to traffic- aiming to create a safer environment for children arriving and leaving the school.

Details of further road closures in the area will be announced as the scheme progresses. Regular project newsletters will be issued.

Between April 19 and May 5, resurfacing works took place on the A530 Middlewich Road.

The resurfacing took place on Flowers Lane to Brookhouse Lane from April 19-22.

Resurfacing works were then completed from Flowers Lane to Chapel Lane from April 25-29.

Cheshire East Council confirmed that the NCWP roadworks would begin after this work was finished.

This is the reason why the Crewe roadworks were pushed back from May 2 to May 9.
