Happy Pancake Day! Have a great Shrove Tuesday ...

It's Shrove Tuesday today which means pancakes will be being cooked and flipped across the UK in a celebration of indulgence.

A Little History:

Shrove Tuesday comes the day before Lent starts, on Ash Wednesday. The name Shrove derives from the old English word 'Shriven' meaning 'to present oneself to a priest for confession, penance, and absolution'.

Lent has always started on a Wednesday so, historically, people went to confessions on Tuesday.

This became known as Shriven Tuesday and eventually became Shrove Tuesday.

Pancake Day, originated from the custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent.

During Lent, there are many foods that some Christians - historically and today - would not eat: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods.

Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.
