It's time for some top tips from Alsager's, 'All to Play for'.

Owning a dog isn't always easy but top dog trainer, Alsager's Julia Hawkins, from Linley Grove is a font of knowledge on the subject.

Julia, a former maths teacher, uses concept training which helps dog owners to see how they can reshape their dogs' brains using games.

And there Julia, who offers tips on her blog https://alltoplayfor.co.uk/blog/ as well as other help and contact details on her website at https://alltoplayfor.co.uk/ shares some special tips for your pooch.

'Training Tips' advice

This week, Julia is thinking about how to be the 'voice' for your dog.

"At the weekend I went to a busy, noisy event. Lots of people, many of whom had their dog with them," said Julia.

"And not one of the dogs I saw was happy to be there, not one. I don't for one second believe that the owners wanted their dogs to be distressed.

"And I don't believe they even realised how their dogs were feeling. The trouble is that our dogs really want to please us! So when they're with us, they absolutely do their best, but we often miss what they are telling us.

"What I saw were subtle signs of distress. The German Shepherd who looked chilled to many but whose ears were back all the time and who was panting despite the temperature being in single figures.

"The spaniel with its tail firmly between its legs. The dachshund barking and lunging at everything going past."

We're at the time of year where there are Christmas events - markets, light switch-ons etc. Be your dog's voice. Do they really want to be there or would they be happier at home, asks Julia.

She said: "You may be wondering how this is dog training. Fair point, but your relationship with your dog and guarding their confidence is the foundation to all training."
