Alsager Cricket Club mark 150-year anniversary with world record attempt
Alsager Cricket Club will be attempting to break a world record during a game tonight (Friday) to celebrate their 150th anniversary.
Current first eleven player and right arm bowler Sam Goodwin, will be charging in from all of 10km – yes, we did say 10km – to deliver the opening ball of the match.
The chairman's XI versus the president's XI celebratory game starts at 6pm today at Alsager Cricket Club in Fairview Avenue.
It will feature players past and present, as well as, of course, the world record attempt.
The current record stands at 7.8km. Sam's run-up is due to start at 4.30pm at Tunstall and before he finally passes the umpire and delivers the game's first ball, he will pass through Kidsgrove and Sandyford whose cricket clubs are also celebrating their 150th anniversaries.
Club chairman, Alan Stancliffe said: "This year is a very special year for our club so we thought we would mark it with a special match and a world record attempt.
"We hope to see lots of people at the club to cheer Sam on and see some of our former stars returning to play."
"It's quite some run up that the poor lad's got to put himself through but this is a truly special occasion – once in a lifetime sort of stuff!
"He'll be fine. Just hope he doesn't overstep…"
