A political figure in Cheshire East has called for an "entire change of government" as Boris Johnson battles to stay in office.

Labour Alsager Town Councillor for East ward and chair of Cheshire East's Local Government Committee, Cllr Michael Unett, has labelled the government a "moral cesspit of a government".

"The problem isn't just Johnson but the entire Conservative Party," says Cllr Unett.

"Rishi Sunak, Savid Javid and many others have resigned from this morally bankrupt government.

"But before anyone even remotely thinks that Rishi Sunak, Savid Javid or others are somehow honourable or have integrity for resigning - a reminder that they propped up and supported Boris Johnson throughout breaking domestic law, breaking international law, trying to scrap and rewrite standards and ethics, and promoting a sex pest.

"Some still stand by Boris Johnson now through all of this. They are all responsible for this moral cesspit of a government.

"Every Conservative MP that elected him and supported him throughout knew what Boris Johnson was like. And they allowed it to happen.

"Standards in the gutter, out of ideas and out of touch. The whole lot of them are unfit to govern. Britain is in need of an entire change of government."

Cllr Unett's comments come the day after numerous resignations from government, including Chancellor, Rishi Sunak and health secretary, Sajid Javid, after more facts emerged about MP Chris Pincher's conduct.

Mr Pincher has admitted groping men and unacceptable conduct in Parliament while drunk - before appointing him to a position in the Conservative Whips' office.

Following the resignations of Sunak and Javid, minister for children and families, Will Quince, has resigned this morning (July 6).

Sevenoaks MP, Laura Trott, has also quit as a ministerial aide at the transport department.

The total number of resignations has now reached 25 in the last 24 hours.

A new chancellor has been appointed, Nadhim Zahawi.
