A fly past, vintage vehicles galore and Foden's Brass Band delight visitors at Smallwood Vintage Rally

By Deborah Bowyer 29th May 2022

A fly past by a Hurricane, monster trucks, steam engines, vintage cars and motorcyles and music by Foden's Band … it was all happening at Smallwood Vintage Rally yesterday (Sunday).

And two friends had the best weekend ever – reuniting their love of vintage things in style at the popular three day vintage rally near Alsager .

Ant Wilding from Brereton near Sandbach and Kevin Minshull from Elworth, Sandbach, have a shared love of vintage vehicles and motorcycles.

Ant has spent around two years restoring a 72 year-old Series 1 Land Rover and Kevin Minshull "stumbled" upon a 42 year old Honda Express during some work in Crewe.

The two have shown their prized possession at the popular annual event for the last two years and are looking forward to the next.

Ant, who keeps his Land Rover in the garage of his Brereton home says he has learnt a lot about Land Rovers during the restoration work.

"I have always loved old Land Rovers. This one was probably used on a farm and is now in beautiful condition. It's nicknamed Rupert after the person we bought it from who was called Rupert.

"I don't use it very often but I will look at fitting a tow bar so I can tow the caravan.

Kevin's Honda Express was stored away in a container he was helping to unload.

"It was destined for the skip but I asked if I could have it. It's really a little shopping bike and is great fun.

"It was great to show it in the motorcycle section of the show."

Crowds attended the three-day event on the A50 near Sandbach, many coming from all over the country.

The grand finale today (Sunday) included a flypast by a Battle of Britain Hurricane at 3pm which flew over the event.

Another entrant in the rally was model engineer from Sandbach, Philip Owston who took along his Pride of Sandbach stream vehicle

Sandbach Nub News told last week how Philip was dusting down one of his pride and joys and getting it ready to show it off to thousands of visitors at the major event.

Congratulations to all who took part in this year's rally.
